Driving Directions to the University of Maryland
Campus
From Baltimore and Points North
- Take I-95 South to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495).
- Take Exit 27 and then follow signs to Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park).
- Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. (See below for Driving Directions on Campus to our Center)
From Virginia and Points South
- Take I-95 North to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495).
- Continue North on I-95/I-495 toward Baltimore.
- Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park).
- Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. (See below for Driving Directions on Campus to our Center)
From Virginia and Points West
- Take I-66 East or I-270 South to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495).
- Go East on I-495 toward Baltimore/Silver Spring.
- Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park).
- Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. (See below for Driving Directions on Campus to our Center)
From Annapolis and Points East
- Take U.S. 50 to Washington, D.C.'s Capital Beltway (I-495).
- Go North on I-95/I-495 toward Baltimore.
- Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park).
- Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. (See below for Driving Directions on Campus to our Center)
From Washington, D.C. (Northwest/Southwest)
- Take 16th St. North which becomes Georgia Ave. North at Maryland/D.C. line.
- Go East on I-495 toward Baltimore.
- Take Exit 25 (U.S. 1 South toward College Park).
- Proceed approximately two miles south on U.S. Route 1. (See below for Driving Directions on Campus to our Center)
From Washington, D.C. (Northeast/Southeast)
- Take Rhode Island Ave. (U.S. 1 North) which becomes Baltimore Ave. North at Maryland/D.C. line.
- Proceed through the city of College Park. (See below for Driving Directions on Campus to our Center)
Driving Directions on Campus to our Center
From North (Laurel, etc.):
- Follow Route 1 South into College Park.
- Take a right onto 193 West (University Blvd) – you will see a GREEN overhead sign that marks this road.
- At the first light, take a left onto Paint Branch Drive. It is highly recommended that you are in the right hand lane when you are turning because you will have to take your first right to get to the parking lot.
- After turning left onto Paint Branch Drive, take a right at the first opening and drive up a very long hill – this road becomes Terrapin Trail. You will see parking lot 6 on your left.
- Once parked, please take the elevator or stairs to the first floor of the garage and follow the foot bridge (walkway) to the back of the School of Public Health Building (SPH), which will be on your left. The SPH is partially connected to the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC), which will be on your right.
- Enter the SPH Building on your left, walk past the red lockers and benches on your left. Continue until you reach the large staircase on the left side of the hallway. Take the staircase up to the first level and make an immediate right. Follow this hallway until the very end; room 1242, Center for Health Behavior Research will be on the right.
From South (Northeast DC, Southeast DC, Hyattsville, etc.)
- Follow Route 1 North into College Park
- You will pass the main entrance to campus on your left
- Take a right onto 193 West (University Blvd) – you will see a GREEN overhead sign that marks this road.

By Subway/Metro
- Take the Red Line train (toward Glenmont); transfer at the Fort Totten station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
- Or take the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U of MD station.
- The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the Metrorail station for free.
- Get off the shuttle at the first stop (this is at the “M” at the traffic circle). Please note that you are not going to the Stamp Health Center. We are in the School of Public Health Building, #255, on the north side of campus.
- Walk to the right of the “M” and turn right on Regents Drive for several blocks. You will pass the Physics and Chemistry Building on your right hand side.
- Take a left on Farm Dr.
- Turn right on Valley Dr. (walk past parking lot 2f and MM2)
- Building #255, School of Public Health (SPH) Building will now be on your right.
- Enter on the far left of the building (when facing the building) by taking the outside staircase to the bottom (the campus recreation center is now on your left) and turning right to enter the building.
- Walk past the red lockers and benches on your left. Continue until you reach the large staircase on the left side of the hallway. Take the staircase up to the first level and make an immediate right. Follow this hallway until the very end; room 1242, Center for Health Behavior Research will be on the right.
MARC from Baltimore (Inner Harbor)
- Take the Camden Line train (toward Washington, D.C.); get off at the
College Park station.
- The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers
on the EAST side of the Metrorail station.
- See above for Metro directions.
MARC from Baltimore (Penn Station/West Baltimore/BWI Airport)
- Take the Penn Line train (toward Washington, D.C.); get off at Union
Station.
- Transfer to the Metrorail system.
- Take the Red Line train (toward Glenmont); transfer at the Fort Totten
station to the Green Line train (toward Greenbelt); get off at the College Park/U
of MD station.
- The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers
on the EAST side of the Metrorail station.

Amtrak
- To Washington, D.C. (Union Station): Transfer to Metrorail system. Follow
directions above.
- To New Carrollton, MD: Transfer to Metrorail system, taking the Orange
Line to the Green Line, and following directions above.
Airports
Reagan Washington National (DCA)
- Located in Arlington, Virginia, this airport is located about 15 miles
south of College Park. Travel can be slow through downtown Washington, D.C.
during rush hours; approximate driving time is 40 minutes.
- You can take the Metrorail from the airport.
- Take the Yellow Line (toward Mt. Vernon Square), transferring to the Green
Line (toward Greenbelt), and get off at College Park/U of MD station.
- The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the
EAST side of the metrorail station.
- Please contact Shuttle-UM for further bus usage information
- Super Shuttle is also a convenient option. The cost for one way trip
is $25 for the first guest and $8 for each additional guest.
- Taxi service from the airport to campus will cost approximately $40.00.
Baltimore-Washington International (BWI)
- Located just outside Baltimore, this airport is approximately 25 miles
north of College Park. Driving time is approximately 35 minutes.
- MARC Train service is available from the BWI Rail Station to College
Park.
- The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the
EAST side of the metrorail station.
- Please contact Shuttle-UM for further bus usage information
- Super Shuttle is also a convenient option. The cost of a oneway journey
is $27 for the first passenger and $11 for each additional guest.
- Taxi service from the airport to campus will cost approximately $35.00.
Washington Dulles International (IAD)
- Located near Herndon, Virginia, this airport is about 35 miles southwest
of College Park. Driving time is approximately one hour.
- You can take the Metro Bus and Metrorail from the airport
- Bus service is available to take you to the West Falls Church Metrorail station
where you will take the Orange Line (toward New Carrollton), transferring to
the Green Line (toward Greenbelt), and get off at College Park/U of MD station.
- The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the
EAST side of the metrorail station.
- Please contact Shuttle-UM for further bus usage information
- Super Shuttle is also a convenient option. The cost for a one way trip
is $35 for the first passenger and $8 for each additional guest.
- Taxi service from the airport to campus will cost approximately $55.00.
Parking
- Parking is available free of charge (only with a temporary parking pass) in the three designated "SPH Study Participant Lot" (near PP1) and Lot 6.
- Please call our office when you arrive on campus and someone from the Center will meet you in the parking lot
with a temporary parking pass for your car.
Metered Parking
- Metered parking is available in lots MM2 and PP2, as indicated on the map.
- More metered parking is available between buildings 99 and 255 (SPH).
